Cooperation with the Government of Portugal in the Energy Field

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and the Ministry of Economy and Employment of the Republic of Portugal signed a letter of intent (LOI) on March 13, 2012, to establish a partnership that covers a wide range of energy technology activities.

Based on the LOI, NEDO and the Ministry of Economy and Employment will aim at realizing collaboration through the exchange of information related to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and smart communities. Such collaboration as exchanging information and personnel, holding seminars, promoting international standardization, and formulating a master plan for a target city to realize a smart community are expected. The broad potential of technology development will be explored mainly in wind and pumped storage technology, photovoltaic technology, and thermal solar systems in the renewable energy field; zero energy buildings and positive energy buildings in the energy efficiency field; and smart grids and energy use management systems in the smart community field.

NEDO regards the LOI as an important step to mutual cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Employment, and it is committed to contributing to solving energy issues common to both Portugal and Japan.

The LOI was signed by Mr. Hideo Hato, President of NEDO, and Mr. Carlos Oliveira, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economy and Employment.
